What Are the New Requirements to Hold a SIA Badge?

If you are hoping to obtain or renew a SIA licence, you may be surprised to hear that some of the requirements have changed. Here is everything that you need to know, including what you can expect from our Emergency First Aid at Work course.

What is a SIA badge?

First of all, what is a SIA badge and what are the new requirements that need to be met in order to obtain one? The SIA badge is a compulsory security guard license. All individuals or security related businesses need to have one before they offer services in in the private security sector. In 2021, changes were made to the requirements needed to gain this license. Certain individuals need to take top-up training to ensure that their badge remains valid, and you may be asked to supply documents that were not asked for when you first applied.

Changes to first aid requirements

However, one of the biggest changes to the requirements to hold a SIA badge is first aid related. Before, only those applying for a close protection licence were required to complete a first aid qualification. Now, those applying for a door supervisor or security guard licence are included in that group.

You will need to take an Emergency First Aid course if any of the following apply:

  • you are applying for a licence for the first time
  • more than 3 years have passed since you last held a licence for that position
  • you are renewing your licence

For those wondering, it’s important to remember that this new requirement for first aid training will simply improve your skills as an SIA licence holder. It will not change or add to any of the obligations you have when responding to an emergency at work.
