Construction Industry’s Future: What’s to come?

A rapid recovery means rising demand

There’s no doubt that Covid hit the construction industry hard. Building projects came to an abrupt halt, and construction sites were silent for months. So many tradespeople were forced to down their tools – and we too saw the impact here at SRP Training. Now, with the darkest days of the pandemic behind us, things are looking up. In fact, the future of the construction industry is looking a lot rosier than many people were anticipating.

How is the industry recovering so quickly?

It’s predicted that the construction industry will reach 2019 levels of output in 2022. What’s the cause of this surprise, but very welcome bounce back? Well, large-scale projects such as HS2 are driving growth in a number of regions, with the Government signing off on a number of huge projects to stimulate the economy and create jobs. Infrastructure and the private housing sector are also seeing a really healthy amount of expansion.

It’s not just building new things that’s helping the industry recover though. Repair, maintenance and improvement work will play their part too. Older buildings require a large degree of work to help the Government meet their net zero emissions target, so investment in modernisation and eco-friendly energy is at an all-time high.

Rising demand

All of this, of course, means that demand for construction industry professionals is rising. Whether you are just starting out in the industry or you have years of experience to your name, you couldn’t be more highly sought after than right now. The most in-demand trades are set to be as follows:

  • Wood trades & interior fit-out (5,500 per year)
  • Other construction professionals and technical staff (5,150)
  • Construction managers (3,600)
  • Electrical installation trades and (3,400)
  • Office-based professionals, technical and IT support staff (7,850)
